Link farms are pages that contain nothing more than a collection of links. Search engines thus had to change their algorithms and gradually shifted away from estimating the link quality and started to assign a quality factor to each of the links pointing to a Web site. As a result search engines are attracted by Web sites that have a higher number of high quality links.

For business-related sites it is advisable to be listed on Yahoo, and despite the fact that it will cost you around $300 a year, it will be money well spent. For non-commercial sites it is possible to be listed for free, but before listing this submission it can take time and follow-up. Open Directory gives you a free listing whether you are business-related or non-commercial, but be prepared to make a lot of follow-up inquiries before you see your site listed.
The second step advisable after directory listing is finding other quality sites but which are certainly related to your content and proper quality, that will not only help your link popularity development but your customer base may also be expanded.

There's not much benefit if you get a link from Web site which gets low traffic and if it has a Page Rank lower than 3.
